THE VOLUNTEERS.
The X Batten- Garrison Artillery (Lyttelton) b*ld an excellently attended* parade at the DrilLshed. Lyttelton. on Wednesday night, -when there were present a. good number of ex-memhers as spectators. After the parade a social gathering was held in the Battery orderly-room, at which the ex■ruembEirs and Captain Mclctyre (who has been on sick leave for some time) entertained the present members of the Battery. Lkiut. Bryee occupk-d the chair, and there were present Oaptain Mclntyre, Lieut. Mannar, ex-Lieut. Palmer, ex-Quartermaster .Serjeant- Smith, 3fr Geo. Laurensoii. M.H.R.. Mr E. W. Just, Staff-Sergeant-Major Colemau. Sergeant Knight (P.A.), Corporal Moir (P.A.), a number of ex-mem-bers, and about sixty members of the Battery. Aft-er the usual loyal toast had been duly •honoured, Lieut. Bryee proposed the health of '"Our Hosts." responded to by exLient. Palmer. ex-Qua-rtermaster-Sergeanf ♦Smith, r.nd Mr White; other toasts were '"Our Instructors," proposed by Lieut. Maisar. responded to by Staif-Sergt.-Major C'oleman, S-srgeant Knight, and Corporal Moir; and "The Press."' During the evening songs were sung by various membei-s of "the Battery. Captain ii. A. M. Buckley. Lieutenant ;\. A. Fooks, and Lieutenant J. Studholme, of the Ashburton Mounted Rities, proceeded to Timaru on Tuesday, to sit for their military examination. v - They will be further examined in practical drill. The proposal to increase the strength of the Queen"? Cadets by the creation of another company will probably be abandoned in favour of one to double tht? strength of the present conxpanv, bringing it up to 80. If this is carried into effect it will be necessary to increase the number of officers. Those desirous of joining the corps are invited to hand in their names at tlw> Drillshed any Thursday evening, or to kaaid th&m into Captain R. Linn, Hereford street, who will forward them to the proper quartei. It is understood that Lieutenant Wall, one of the cadets who went Home for training, and afterwards went to South Africa, h;is been appointed to command the Pea--manent Artillery at Lyttelton. The College Rifl&s held a parade yesterday evening 0 Tliere were 41 present, under Captain Harper. The corps marched to Park and practised ceremonial drill there." Rifle movements were practised on the march to the Park and back.
