TEACHERS' SALARIES.

(SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.")

WELLINGTON,. October 12. A bill has been introduced to enable provision to be made for a colonial scale of staff and salaries for teachers in the public schools, and to make other provisions respecting public schools. The Act is to come into operation on the first day of January next. It provides that notwithstanding anything contained in the principal Act, the number of teachers and pupil teachers in every public school, and the salaries and allowances paid to the teachers and pupil teachers shall be determined by regulations made under this Act. Section 8 of the principal Act, relating to the appropriation of moneys required in administering the Act is amended by repealing sub-section 2 and substituting the following—"ln payment to the board of every district of a sum sufficient to pay the salaries and all allowance of teachers and pupil teachers, and grants to the school committees in such district, according to a scale prescribed by regulations, and to defray the general expenses of such board." Every board shall make grants to the school committees of the district for general education purposes, of sums not less than according to a minimum scale prescribed by regulations. Except within a borough no public school shall, after the passing of this Act, be esfiiohshed within three miles of an existing public school, without the approval of\he Minister.
