GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS,
(Bγ OT7R COMMEBCIAL EDITOB.)
Friday Evening
There is nothing freeh to report in connection with the wheat market, the only business passing being in small lots at quotations, 2s 6d lo.b. being the highest price given for Tuscan. There is not much -wheat on offer, as growers recognise that with no freight available, exporters will not operate.
The oats market is still stagnant, and there is no demand except for ordinary trade requirements.
Barley is still enquired for, but there is little or no prime malting to be obtained. Fair malting has been in demand at equal to 2s 1.0.b. for local requirements arid export to the north, and enquiries, have come to hand from Australia, but barley of the quality required cou.d not be had at the price offered.
The spring demand for rape and turnip seed has'set in strongly, and sales to date have been much larger than during the same period of last year. Notwithstanding that the potato market in Sydney is weaker, buyers are still willing to purchase at 27s 6d to 30s per ton. It is expected that between 5000 and 6000 tons will be shipped to Sydney this week, and the Whangape takes '3000 sacks from Timaru, and it is believed that a quantity is also being shipped by her from Oamani. The cheese market is very firm, and the southern factories have sold this season's output for export at about a halfpenny per lb in advance of last season's prices.
