THE EXPERIENCE OF THE ROUGH RIDERS.
Ona of the Canterbury Rough Riders, in a letter from Het Bad (or Hot Bath, the sanatorium of the Transvaal), dated August 25th, writes:—The Canterbury troops have suffered very severely during this march, losing Lieutenant Bradburne and Trooper Luko Perham, and having wounded Troopers J. J. Heasley and A. Chapman. Bradburne and Perham were killed in action at Carlyle Drift on August 20th. It was really marvellous that our casualties were not greater. A number of hoises were killed and wounded. You will note that we have had exceptionally bad luck with, our officers—(Major Jowsey recalled, Lewin left, Captain Chaytor wounded, Captain Bourn a prisoner, Lieutenant Berry dead, Lieutenant Cameron a prisoner, Rose resigned, Bradburne killed, Fitzherbert sick (now back), and Walker on the staff at Bloemfontein. I expect Captain Chaytor will join us again in Pretbria (he having almost recovered), and Mr Walker has been wired for. . . . We are starting for Pretoria to-morrow to be re-fitted, and then we journey toward Middleburg. How long this war is going to last goodness only knows. I think Christmas will still see us here."
