THE JUBILEE EXHIBITION.

EXECUTTVE COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Jubilee Exhibition Executive Committee was held yesterday evening, Mr R. Allan (president) in the chair. ' ■ ■■■■

The Chairman reported that everything in connection with die Exhibition had been go.ing on satisfactorily. He regretted that Lady B&nfuriy would not be present when the "Exhibition was opened, but Lord Ranfurly would be sure to be present. It had been definitely fixed that the Exhibition should open on November Ist. The season tickets were going off well, and the, family tickets would be largely availed of. Only eight of the hospital nurses would be able to attend, and, on the suggestion of tlte Chairman, it was decided to treat tie eight aa members of a (family. . The question of attendants'passes was kit to the Treasurer. j\ It was .decided! to issue exhibitors' tkk/te at 10s 6d each* to. each partner or manager of a firm.

The Chairman stated that it had been decided to sell the two fruit stalls by auction, and this was approved of. The Finance Committee's suggestion to do away with the extra 6d for booking seats was accepted.

After discussion ifc was moved by Mr Charters—"That a sub-committee be appointed, consisting of the President, Chairman of the Entertainment Committee, Mr R. C Bishop, and! Mr C. Louisson, who shall arrange for the issue of special invitations for the opening ceremony, and! for the reserving of seats for the Committee and their friends.

A sub-committee, consisting of the President, Messrs Wallace and Booth, and the Chairman of the Entertainment Committee, was appointed to arrange the order of the opening ceremon}-. The Chairman of the Advertising Committee reported that the recommendation of the Executive that the Committee should advertise for designs for a certificate for the Workers' Committee had been carried out, but without response, and the Committee therefore recommended that- it should be dropped. He also reported that the Committee had issued a Jubilee Guide, which ■had been sent all through the colony. A letter was read from Messrs Rennie and Pearce, the contractors, stating that they •and received numerous applications for advertising on the outside of the building, and they were prepared to receive applications and to aDow 'the Committee two-thirds of the amount received, the remaining onethird to be retained by them as a set-off against the consequent depreciation in the timber. It was stated by Mr Charters tiat about £100 was expected from this source. It was resolved to accept the offer, provided only the Worcester street frontage be touched.

A letter was received from the Secretary of the General Committee of the Canterbury Jubilee Celebration, forwarding a copy of a resolution according a vote of thanks to the Committee of the (Exhibition for their courtesy an meeting the Commemoration Committee for arranging the entertainments for Jubilee Week. Mr J. A. Prostick, Chairman of the Entertainment Committee, reported that there was in Christchrorcii a copy of the original anthem composed on the occasion of the Canterbury Pilgrims leaving London, fifty yeara ago, and which was sung in St. Paul's. Tha Entertainment Committee were authorised to obtain the copy. .and. if possible, to utilise it in connection'wdth the Jubilee ceremony. The Chairman stated t3ia.t the caretaker's rooms would be available for the Press representatives during the Exhibition. The Chairman of the Home Industries Committee reported that there would be about 2700 ■entries. Exhibits were now arriving, and. some of t&em were already set Up. .Mr Jas. Armiger wrote, offering a flag made of his new material, Buntintine. The ■offer was accepted with thanks, the flag to ,be a Union Jack. The Chairman stated that Messrs Milner and Thompson had practically given the Committee the use of three pianos, and had charged a v«ry moderate rental for the other two. They were also sending season tickets for the Committee, and providing box plans free of charge. The Chairman reported that the Finance Committee had recommended that £15 should be expend-ed in a gymnastic entertainment, and that £13 be ■expended in school competitions. The recommendation was agreed to. The Chairman stated that arrangements had been made for fire prevention, and that a strong committee would ba appointed to look after the fire escapes.

MAORIS AT THE EXHIBITION,

Arrangements are being made, as already stated, for the bringing down for the Jubilee of a number of North Island Maoris, and his Worship the Mayor has been in communication with Mr Laurenson, on the subject.

The Hon. Mr Carroll has been approached by Mr Geo. Laurenson, M.H.R., with a view of obtaining the services of Mr Parata, jun., in connection with the proposed trip of the North Island Maoris to the Jubilee Exhibition. Mr Carroll has intimated his willingness to give the required permission to Mr Parata to act- as asked. The followin"- letter has been received by the Native Minister: —"Gisborne, 23rd September. Hon. Mr Carroll, Wellington,—Greetings to you in your important duties. Your telegram has been received, and this is to say when the arrangements in connection with that matter are completed, send mc a telegram forthwith, aiid at the same time let mc know the number of parsons required from this place to go thither. Be quick about it, so that I may soon make a selection of the young men and young women of Poroarangi for that representation, and also to enable mc at once to collect Maori mats, Maori weapons, etc., such as are used by the Maoris on such occasions. Perhaps guns will be obtainable in Christchurch for the war dance. My wish is to get over 100 persons in this place. You and I should go with our young people as their elders. From your very loving relative, Tuta Nihoniho."

' The Sub-Committee appointed by the Executive Committee to name the various avenues in the Exhibition, Qiave decided that the main avenue shall bs named the Canterbury, and the others as follows: —Charlotte Jane, Kudolph, Sir Geo. Seymour, Cressv, Godley, Wakefield, Bowen. Hall, Fitzgerald, Deans, and Crosbie Ward. These names will be painted on calico and suspended so as to be seen from either side of the avenues.

The Decorative Committee of. the Exhibition have commenced their labours, and a general scheme, which will prove exceedingly effective, has been decided upon. It will include the use of flags and of red, •whiterand blue art muslin, which 'should have a very pretty effect.

The arrangements for a children's fancy dress ball in the Jubilee Exhibition Hall on Boxing Night hava been completed, and there is every probability of the gathering being a pronounced success.

The Entertainment Committee of the Jubilee Exhibition met on Wednesday, iir Frostick, chairman, presiding. The Sub-Committee to •whom, • the question of arranging for the children's ball on Boxing night had been referred brought up their report. The price of the tickets was fixed, and the SubCommittee requested to takei steps to carry ant the details. A report on the subject of the gymnastic competition was brought up, N recommending that medals for allround work be given instead of, a shield. This -wa& agreed to, and. the. programme as amended ordered to be sent out. Arrangements were also made for the competition by ladies. A <*ood deal of routine business wns transacted.
