DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB'S SPRING MEETING.
(P&KSS ASSOCIATION TKUSOBAM.) DUNEDIN, October 10. There was a fair attendance at the Dunedin Jockey Club's Spring Meeting. The weather mv threatening, and heavy rain foil before the atarting of the second race, which kept on for about an hour, when it cleared up end the sun camo out beautifully. The course itm hoavy to »Urt with, and the rain made it very slippery, -while the public were moderately successful in selecting winners. The facing wsa only moderately exciting. Investments were fairly brisk, and £4773 was put through the machines, aa against £1742 10s laat yoar. Results: —
FIRST HURDLE HANDICAP, of CO soys; second 10 soys from stake. One mile and three-quarters. 161. O. R. Wise's b g Her, by Le Loup, aged, list 12lb ... (G. Robertson) 1 41. J. Nicol's Southerly Buster, 9st slb
<J. Pine) 2 16. W. Baird'a Clinker, 9st 121b (McKenzie) 3 66 Dundee lost 131b, 77. Izal Hist 31 b (car. lOet 61b), and 80. St. Hiko 9at 2lb also started. St. Hiko took command at the start, but _H_r going three-quarters of a mile, Ilex was In front, only to be roplaced by Dundee, who led rounding into the straight, with Clinker arid. Ilex together next. Clinker was first over the last hurdle, but onco on the flat Ilex again took command, and won by two lengths. Southerly Buster beat Clinker for second place a few yards from home. Time, Smin 37 _-sth sec. Dividends, £2 8s and £1 14s. XTIRST HACK HANDICAP, of 40 soys; second 5 soys from stake. Six furlongs. IT9. Hon. G. Galileo 7st 13lb and 22 St. Linda 7st also started. La Reine got tho best of a straggling start, and hold the advantage to the end, winning by a good two lengths. Time, lmin _2sec. Dividend, £3 4s. Jupiter, 9st 31b (J. McComb) 2 125. J. Boreland's Fulmen, Bst I3lb (H. Donovan) 3 _I_} Brisa 7st 101b, and 28} Glenelg 7st 21b also started. Nihilist waa first away with Glenolg worst. As they settled down Nihilist was still in front, with Jupiter second. Rounding the first turn Brisa commenced to tail ofi, and Glenelg not only made up ground but ran into third place. Along the back of the course Nihilist was still leading, with Glenelg second, just a head in front of Jupiter, Brisa being fourth and Fulmen last. Rounding towards the •traight Nihilist still held his advantage, with the others closing up. Nihilist landed first in the straight, and though Jupiter and Fulmen made efforts to get up, they could not succeed, Nihilist winning fairly comfortably by two lengths, with Fulmen three lengths away third, and Glenelg last. Vanilla and Pampero jumped ofi with the lead when the tapes were raised, Goldspur getting o_ badly. This pair held their aayantage, Goldspur and Quickahot not being in it, and a splendid finish resulted in a win by a bead for Vanilla, Edelweiss an indifierent third. Time, lmin 6 2-sth sec. Dividend, SELLING RACE, of 40 soys. Weight-for-age, with allowances. Six furlongs. 919. P. P. Olaridge's eh m Sub Rosa, by Son-of-a-Gun—Roseneath, aged, 7st lllb ... ••■ (D. H. Hewitt) 1 1954. J. Mo-vowen's Izal, Bst 61b (W. Brown) 2 71. J. R. Sewell'a Galileo, 7st 131b (L. King) 3 135} Gladys 11. and 41 Plotter Sst 61b also started. ,_..-, Once in their strides Plotter and Sub Rosa took the lead. After going three furlongß Plotter died away, and Galileo joined Sub Rosa, but the latter drew away near home, and won by quite two lengths from Izal, who passed Galileo, and beat him by a length. Time, lmin 14_ec. Dividend, £2 14s. The winner was sold to W. Baird for £45.
