ST. ALBANS.
The St. Aibaas Borough Council mefc yesterday evening. A d«patatton was rec«ire<i from several ratepayers protesting against the bad condition of Aikinan's road, \rbich was almost unfit for traffic.
The Works Ciimrmtfcee were asked to take action, as requested by the deputation. On the recommendation of the Works Cbramftiee, the tenders of Mr E. J. Qoeree and Smart and Sons for 1500 yards each of broken metal at 5a 3d per yard were accepted. It was decided to refer the quotations for a steam roller back to the Works Committee for more explicit information. The Special Committee appointed to consider the application of Mr Thomas Tueraley to open Speace street, on the Shirley road, recommended that no action be taken by the Council. This recommendation was adopted. The Lighting Committee recommended that on the expiration of the present gas contract in July next, negotiations be opened with the Gas Company for a further contract with the improved incandescent burners. The report was adopted. It was also decided to call the attention of the Avon Road Board to the drain nuisance beyond Norman's lane.
The Loan Executive Committee considered it inadvisable to proceed with th« legrading of Madras street. The committee recommended thitt a deep well be put down in Ciare road, adjacent to Papanui road, and that two 400-g«lk>n tanks be erected. Tha report was adopted. ITie Finance Committee reported that the receipts since last meeting had been £294 lis 4d. Accounts to the amount of £394 9a 3d were recommended for payment. The intermeddate payments had been £63 7s 6d. There was a debit balance of £18 19s lld. The receipts on the loan account had been £118s, and; £78 9s Id was recommended for payment. There was a credit balance of £553 10s lld, and fixed deposits £6000. The report was adopted. The election of committees for the year resulted as follows: —Works Committee: Ors. Glass (chairman), Morgan and Barlow; Finance Committee: Crs. J&okmon (chairman), Bates and Jieafce; Loan Executive Committee: Crs. Glass, Barlow, Morgan. Newton and Jackman; Sanitary and Lighting Committee: Cr*. Newtcci, Dearsley, and Anderson.
It was decided to join the Municipal Association at the beginning of their financial year.
Mr H.G. Ell wrote with reference to the distribution of cab license fees, stating that he would do his best to get the Council's recommendations incorporated in the bill now before the House.
It was decided to give the Council's men a half-holiday each week. Cr. Bates moved as a recommendation to the Lighting Committee—"That in negotiating with the Gas Company it be stipulated that on all nights, whether moonlight or not, the lamps be left alight until 12 o clock."
