PECULIAR AFFAIR IN THE STREET.

At a quarter past two yesterday morning two member, of the literary staff of "The Pres*»" left the office in Cashel street, and started for home. They separated at Aitken and Roberta's corner, one turning north up Colombo street, the other crossing tbe road and continuing along the north side of Cashel street. The latter had just reached the bootshop at the corner, when from one of the dark recesses a man -stepped out and accosted him. He answered the man and passed on. Th* journalist shouted for tho police in order that the man might be intercepted, but the constable was several blocks away at the time, and came up too late. Meanwhile, hia companion from wliom he had just separated, hearing tbe shouting had turned back, and when opposi**. Brice's corner saw a tall, thin man run swiftly and silently up Colombo street to Arenas'- Hotel, past that, and into High street. The gas lights had all been turned out, but the light from the moon was sufficient to distinguish the man's form moving in front of the shops. It was too late to intercept him, for he disappeared in the twinkling of an eye. A constable arrived at Cashel street corner shortly afterwards, but nothing could be done then, since no one had obtained a distinct glimps* of the {.Haw's face.
