EFFECTIVE WORK OF THE GUNS
United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received September 12th, 9.28 a.m.) LONDON, September 11. General Buller on Saturday attacked a precipitous ridge in horse-shoe form, and 1500 ft high. The Spitzkop road lay at the furthest point, while deep ravines prevented a turning movement. The position was carried under cover of the artillery; the Devons operated on the right, the Royal Irish in the centre, and the Royal Scots on the left. The enemy retreated over a naiaow causeway, and lost many, though the mist sheltered them. Shrapnel burst over a volunteer company of the Gordon Highlanders marching in column seven miles from the enemy, killing three and wounding sixteen, but did not interfere with their steadiness. The total British casualties were thirteen killed and twenty-five wounded.
