BOARD OF EDUCATION.

A meeting of the Board of Education was held yesterday. Present — Messrs T. S. Weston (chairman), T. W. Adams, H. W. Peryman, M. Dalzell, and J. Rennie. An apology for non-attendance was received from Mr McMillan.

On the advice of the Building Committee the Board decided that it could not agree to hiring a trap to convey children to the Mayheid School, as there were many other districts where the children travelled four or five miles to school.

It was decided to grant the usual aid. to Lyndlnirst, if'the settlers would provide a suitable building and guarantee £65 salary. The Rev. D. Rodger having written to say the Presbyterian Church at Horsley Downs was not available for day school purposes, it was decided to ask Mr Brooker for two acres of his holding on Lor 21. On the recommendation of the Appointments- Committee Miss K. Menzies wns appointed mistress at Aylesbury; Miss Symes, part-time teacher at Le Bon's Bay; and Mr F. Benjamin, mate at Glentunnel. Miss E. MdMahon resigned her appointment as teacher of the Clarence Bridge aided school, and the local Committee were asked to recommend another suitable teacher. Mr W. H. Montgomery wrote, consenting to represent the Board on the Akaroa High School Board. A request from Mr F. Barber, that Longman's School Readers might be placed on the Board's list of authorised books, was referred to the Appointments' Committee, •with whom Mr Adams was asked to act. Tho Board could not see its way clear at present to form the Omihi district into a school district, but was open to reconsider its decision at some future date. A letter from the School Committees' Association, with regard to amending regulation 3 of the Gammack scholarship regulations, in the direction of inserting four years instead of. two with a view to securing the bequest for scholars of the primary schools, was referred to the Appointments Com--mittee to report upon. It was decided to leave to the discretion of the various committees the question of allowing tho schools to break up ; a week earlier at Christmas, so ac to allow of the children taking part in the Jubilee celebrations. The Board went into Committee to consider a supplementary report of the Appointments Committee, and, on resuming, adjourned.
