' OFFICIAL ESTIMATE OF COST,
United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received September llth, 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 11. No tender has yet been accepted for the Pacific cable.
A difficulty has arisen respecting the successor to Sir Julian Salomons on the Cable Board. New South Wales nominated Mr Copeland, but Queensland desires either Sir Henry Norman or Sir H. Tozer.
The official estimate of the cost of the cable, including I the two maintenance steamers and all other initial expenditure, is £1,730,659. Tenderer, are to undertake to manufacture and lay the cable, provide and erect cable bouses, make surveys, and keep the cable Working for thirty consecutive days. It is understood that othei expenses, amounting to £180,000, include' station buildings, staff quarters, instruments, engineers' fees, and one maintenance ship, costing £80,000. These are not in eluded in the tenders.
