FIRE IN SYDENHAM.

Shortly before four o'clock yesterday morning a fire broke out in a four-roomed house owned and occupied* by Mr Walter Toop, Walton street, Sydenham. The Brigade quickly got to work, but the fire had got too firm a hoM, and the buildiing and its contents were destroyed. Ths house of Mr Robert Oakley, adjoining, was considerably damaged, while the house of Mr Archibald Johnston, on tks other sick, was slightly damaged. Tlia Brigade confined their efforts to saving these two dwellings, and were successful, although at one time the case seemed >hopekss and the furniture was in consequence rsmoved. Mr Toop says his family left the house on Saturday evening to join their mother, who has been staying at New Brighton. He returned from town, cmd went to bed about 10.30 p.m., when every thing appeared all right. He was awakened" by 'the smoke, and finding the place in flames, rushed out, dragging a sewing machine with 'him, but leaving his clothes, containing £9. Mr Toop's house was insured in the Alliance Office for £100, and the furniture for £50. Mr Oakley's house and furniture were insured in the New Zealand Office for £200. Mr Johnstone's house was insured for £200, and his furniture for £200. Mr Toop is a heavy loser by the fire. I
