THE (MAHARAJAH OF GWALIOR.
The __a_arajah of Gwalior, who has been appointed to General Gaselee's staff, governs a native State of Central India embraci__ 29,067 square miles of territory, having a population of 3,5_5,233. The" M_h_rajah supports an army of 12,000 men, equipped with modern weapons, and this force can be increased to 30,000 by calling to the colours men who have passed through the ranks. Gw-lior, tho capital, about 65 miles south of Agra, has a population of 104,000 persons.
A few weeks ago Lord! George Hamilton, Secretary of State for India, informed the House of Commons that he had received from the Maharajah of Gwalior the offer of a fully-equipped hospital ship for China, upon which he was willing to spend twenty lakhs of rupees. The announcement brought cheers from ail parts of tbe House. Lord George went on to say that this princely offer was mad© on behalf of the Maharajah, his mother, and his wife, to testify their loyalty to ber Majesty the Queen-Empress. Her Majesty's Government had expressed their acceptance of this most munificent offer, and their deep appreciation of the motives which had actuated bis Highness in making it.
