The Chinese excavated ten thousand tons Of earth at Ho-hsi-wu, With th. object of cutting the b&nks of the Peiho. Three days' additional work would have enabled them to inundate the country sufficiently to arrest the advance of the Allies.
JAPANESE POLICY.
(Received August 19th, 5 p.m.).. HONG. KONG, August 18. The Chinese Minister at Tokyo informed Li Hung Chang that Japan was willing to assist t'he Dowager and the Emperor, but was determined to punish Prince Tuan and several other chief culprits.
CHINESE GENERALS WOUNDED
Generals Sung-ma and Li Peng Heng were wounded at ths battle of Yang-tsun.
