ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

A MAN BURNED TO DEATH

Richard's cycle works at Waimate were burned down early yesterday morning. When tbe fire was discovered it had obtatoed a strong hold, and there was never any hope of saving the buildin-r, which was an old one. When the tire was got under, the body of J. Richard was found in the burning debris in the office in a sitting posture with tlie legs burnt off. Richard had been at Morven on the previous afternoon and left there at 11.30 p.m. On returning he went to the shop, with the intention, it is supposed, of writing a letter, leaving his bicycle outside. Neighbours heard a loud report shortly after one, as of an explosion, and at 1.45 a.m. the fire was discovered. An explosion of acetylene gas is the supposed cause. The deceased was about twenty-three, and was to have been married next month. The insurance an the stock was £200, and on the building, which was the property of Mr John xjunt, £135, both, in the Alliance Office. An inquest will be held.

South Dunodin. last evening, was knocked down under the horses' feet, and before the driver could stop the car, it passed aver both legs below the knee. Dr. Coughtrey, who was passing, amputated the right foot and the left leg above the knee, but th* child died at 31 o'clock. The occurrence was purely accidental. INVERCARGILL, August 17. A railway porter named Hansen was killed to-night at Lumsden during shunting operations.
