CITY COUNCIL.
Monday, July 9.
The adjourned meeting of the Council was held at 7.30 p.m. Present—The Mayor, Crs. Gray/ Andrews, Cooper, JSorensen, Kincaid, Pnidhoe, Clark, J. T. Smith, Moras, Loughnan, and Green.
Correspondent wtos read; as under: — From tire New Brighton' Tramway Company, intimating their intention, of applying (for a renewal of their lease of the Corporation Tramway. Cr. Gray mored—"That the matter be referred! to the Special Committee." Cγ. Coo par seconded the motion-. Cr. Andrews movedl us an amendment— "That the matter be referred to a. committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs. Gray, Soreuseut ami Chopper." This was not seconded.
Cr. PrudSioe moved! as a further amendment.—"Tfcat the matter t>3 referred to the Finance and Works Committee."
Cr. 'Sorensen 'Seconded th-e amendment, ■and .said tha-t Ohe Select Committee had proved "an abortion."
Cγ. Gray rose to a point of order. Was any Councillor in order iv referring to. a Committee of the Council as an-abortion.? Cr. .withdrew the word "abortion."
T&e amendmeret -was put and carried* and ■was put as the substantive motion, wh&n Cr. Lotighnatt moved 1 as an amendment— "That the matter be referred to ■tfhe Finance arid By-law -Committee." <Cr. Oiorris seconded the amendment, ■mudk was carried.
From the Grand 1 Orange Lodge, asking for <*c patronage of the Council for the concert tin. July 12th in aid of the Indian Famins Fund. On the motion of Cγ. Prudhoe tfh« request was granted. From A. Guudin with reference to the conduct of a licensed carrier. Tlie matter was referral to 'fhe By-laV Committee. From the Department of Agriculture, stating that 'there could hs no reason why a 'district, eboxild not arrange for a special day for AAor Day. On tfoe motion of Or. Kincaidy the fetter was received and the Mayor requested' to proclaim • Thursday, 19th July, as Arbor Day ifol- Ohristehurch. The (Reserves (Committee -were organising in- rt'he direction of jaunting some trees undfer the supervision of some membera of the Beautifying Association. From (Messrs Morrow, Bassett and Go. and others, drawing attention to the blocking of ifkv footpath near In'glis's Buildings by cabs. They asked 'that tbp urimd should be removed, that no cabs or .other obstruction be permitted .beyond the northern 'boundary of Cashel street, and that a crossing be anade from ttae •eastern side of €as?h?l street to the Western side of Higi street.
The question of the Removal of the cabs •was referred to the By-law Committee, that o : f the .urinal to the Sanitary Committee, andl that of the crossing to the Committee.
From Mr W. H. Helming, suggesting that some portion of the estuary should be reclaimed and tfhe di&struetor placed there. The- letter was received , .
From Mr H. J. Beswick, with reference to.the planting of-the South, belt, stating that the Sydenham Council had now agreed to contribute £25 if th© Sydenham Empowering Act could be repealed. A gnb-cotti' mitteo, consisting of Dr. Irving, Messrs Chrystall and Beswick. had been appointed to communicate with the City Council on the subject, and ask them to agree to proceed with the planting. In answer to a question from Cr. Sorensen, The Mayor said the share to be paid by the city would be about £25.
Cr. Prudhoo moved—"Tliat the sum of £25 be allocated towards the planting of the South belt."
Or. Morris seconded the motion, which, after some discussion, was agreed tp. From Dr. Irving, asking permission to pknt seven trees on the triangle, in. front of
