(Received July 7th. 5.15 p.m.) LONDON, July 5. In the House of Commons Mr Brodrick stated that the Government had received no confirmation of the massacre at the Britisli Legation at Pekin. The Admirals were hourly expecting Japan's reply to Britisli communications relating to sending reinforcements to China. SPREAD OF THE REPORT THROUGHOUT CHINA. The news of the massacre at the Britisli Legation was circulated simultaneously at Tien-tsin, Cbe-foo, and Shanghai. Nothing reliable, hovrever. has yet been received at Shanghai. There -was circulated a horrible report of the butcheries, based chiefly on mysterious hints from the Chinese officials. THE ATTACK ON THE EUROPEANS. THE "DAILY MAIL'S" ACCOUNT. REPORTED POISONING OF THE EMPEROR. FIVE THOUSAND NATIVE CHRISTIANS MASSACRED. (Received July Bth, 4.50 p.r,;.) LONDON, July 6. The "Daily Mail" states that owing to General Junglu and the Dowager Empress evincing a disposition to suppress the Boxers, Prince Tuan' and Kang-yj lef i, the* Council shouting "Down with foreigners." The Palace officials and populace immediately attacked the Europeans. Prince Tuan administered opium to the Emperor and the Dowiager Empress, the former dying. The latter is reported to be insane. According to a Chinese xeport received at Shanghai, the Boxers butchered five thousand native Christians, chiefly Catholics, at Pekin. CHINESE ATTACKERS IN PEKIN REPORTED 'DISHEARTENED. URGENT -MESSAGE PROM RUSSIAN 3JINISTER. (Received July 9th, 12.45 a.m.) HONG KONG, July 8. A runner who left Pekin on the 3rd , inst. informed the British Consul at Shanghai that two Legations were uncaptured. The Chinese troops and Bosrjrs were grea-tly disheartened as 2000 of them had been killed, including anany oS. their leaders. The Boxers declared! the foreigners had broken their mystic powers ami were afra,id to approach the Legations. The Russian Minister at Pekin, on< the 24th Juns, seat a message. "Food and ammunition almost exhausted." AN ESCAPE FROM THE MASSACRE. (Received July Bth, 1.12 a.m.) HONG KONG, July 8. Mr Justice Bigham's son, an attache, escaped! from Pekin. THE GERMAN MINISTER'S DEATH. When Baron Yon Ketteler was killed in Pekin the British, guard attempted to protect him, and killed several Chinese soldiers.
