ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Ashburtoa Borough Council was held on the 19th inst. Present—The Mayor (Mr H. Friedlander). Crs. H. M. Jones, W. Joliii'e, E. J. Paid", J. Pauling, D. Thomas, and H. Willis. Th't debit balance at the bank was.reported to be £46 Os 4d7 The "Paymaster-General wrote enclosing a cheque for £13 Is subsidy towards the Publio Library, Letters were received froni the Goudty Council, asking for payment of 4s 4d for repairs to trafficbridge, £10 on account of the hospital, and £68 15s 8d for licensing election expenses. Letters with reference to the proposed new ?ost and telegraph office were read from the üblic Works Department, and Messrs J. —tcLachlan, C. A. C. Hardy, and the Hon. 'Major SJSward, M.H.R.'s. * A letter was received from the Charitable Aid Board stating that tlie Council's coiitribuifani for the ensuing year would be £73 6s 2d. It was decided to pay the amount in montliiy instalments. A design for additions to the Council'a offices, ;ahd to the Public Library, were accepted j and the Engineer was instructed, to prepare plans and specifications for the work, not to exceed a, total cost of £1100. The llayor and Crs. Paul and Pauling were appointed a Committee to deal with a tender for nevf"Uniforms for the Fire Brigade..Tlie Mayor and Crs. Joliffe, Paul, Scaly and Thomas were appointed a Committee to make enquiries and report upon a. scheme for providing retiring allowances for the Council's officers. Accounts amounting to £306 2s 2d were passed for payment. The Council then sat as a Domain Board, and after transacting some routine business, adjourned..
