MEETINGS, ENTERTAINMENTS, &c.

The annual picnic of scholars, teachers and friends of St. Augustine's Church Sunday echool, Waimate, was held on Wednesday. It was intended to have the picnic in Knottingley, buc because of the threatening appearance of the early foienoon the Volunteer grounds and shed were chosen.

The second annual meeting of the Canterbury Hockey Association was held at tho V.M.C.A. rooms on Wednesday night. The Rev. H. Mathias occupied the chair. The followingofficerswere elected for the ensuing year: —President, Mr Chae. Lewis, M.H.R.; vice-presidents, Rev. H. H. Mathias and Mr W. Johnston; hon. eecretarj , , Mr J. E. Schneider; assistant secretary, Mr Sibbald; treasurer, Mr Gunn ; auditor, Mr Sherries. It was decided to increase the annual subscription to £1 Is. An executive committee was appointed, consisting of the secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer and Meaara Sherries and Rat.kin.

There was a very good house at the Theatre Royal last night, when the bill of the preceding evening was repeated. Tonight a new piece, "The House of Mystery," will be played. Mr Bentley gives*-his new lecture "The Sign of the Cross," with musical illustrations, on Sunday evening next, at the Theatre Royal.

The Fuller Vaudeville Company had a large audience at the Oddfellows' Hall last evening. To-night will be the last of the present programme, a change Deing given to-morrow evening.
