I "The Times" states that Lord Roberts expected the raiding to commence at the moment of his advance, and halted. Half the enemy's object failed, Lord Roberts refusing to engage. GENERAL WHITE'S ARRIVAL IN ENGLAND. General White, the defender of Ladysmith, has arrived at -Southampton, and was accorded an enthusiastic ovation on landing. PRISONERS. (Received April 17th, 12.20 a.m.) LONDON, April 16. Sobiel and two other Boer prisoners are confined in St. Helena citadel, owing tv a daring attempt on their part to escape aboard a Dutch cruiser lying in the harbour.
