THE ADDINGTON CAMP. . At the first parade yesterday morning Lieutenant Bailey took a squad! in , extended movement drill, and Camp Sergeant-Major Coleman instructed another squad in firing and manual exercises. At the 9.30 parade there was no mounted wort done, SergeantIvtajor Coleman giving the men further instruction in divisional drill. As many of the saddles in camp have been taken home by their owners, it is probable that there will be no more mounted parades. Owing to the rain yesterday afternoon, the men were given fire and manual instruction by Sergeant-Major Coleman in the produce shed. Captain Lindsay left camp shortly before the 9.30 parade, and he was cheered by the men as he drove away, • Mrs T.. G. Russell, Fendalton, sent an acceptable gift of fruit to camp yesterday. On. Wednesday evening the members of the Akaroaßoating Club and other friends met to say good-bye to Troopers Frank Perhajn jße} H. At the annual meeting of the Educational Institute last ni»ht the following resolution was carried.•—"That this meeting learns with pride that one of the members of $be Institute, Mr W. Kain, is about to.proceed to South Africa with, the Fifth Contingent, and wishes him a. successful career and a safe return to New 'Zealand." Several spoke to the motion, which was carried with acclamation. Trooper E. J. The riding test of the Hawke's Bay members of the Fifth Contingent was flrst-claes. but that of several of the Marlborough and Nelson candidates was far below the standard, and they had to be rejected. Dr. Thomas also rejected of the applicants ias medically unfit. _ j A meeting of citizens was held this after- ! noon to consider the auestion of a send-off Ito the Fifth Contingent, The Mayor presided, and it was resolved to entertatn the Contingent at luncheon at noon on the day of departure, , and an executive committee to carry out the arrangements for the sendoff was appointed, All the town and country bands are to be invited to be present on the occasion, and the Government and Wellington and Maoawatu Railway Company are to be asked to carry all volunteers free on the railway. DUNEDDJ, March 23. The colleagues of the Premier to-day presented hie son, Lieutenant Seddon, with a spirit flask, golden sovereign case, and a hunting crop, bearfag inscriptions, "Good luck to Lieutenant Seddon, from his father's colleagues."The Premier said that it was probably the last opportunity he would have of addressing his son. He urged him to be maaly.- steadfast, and upright, and yield implicit obedience to his sunerior officers. The horses of the Fifth Contingent were brought into town, and were about to proceed to Port wheii it was ascertained that the Gymeric could not possibly receive them, not being ready, and they were ordered back to camp. The Premier states that they will be shipped the first thing in the morning, and the Gymsric will leave in the afternoon.
