THE COMMAND OF THE CONTINGENT.
TO THE EDITOR OF THS PBES3. Sir, —I have just heard that Captain Cradock, late of the 6th, Uragoons, is to command " the seoond New Zealand Contingent. Great Scott! can Him be true? IttaJjesjQie's breath away to think that we have not in the whole of our volunteer force an officer capable of taking 200 men to South. Africa and commanding them in action, acting under the orders 'and supervision of Imperial officers. To my mind a greater slur could not have been cast Upon the volunteers. Is this the way to treat officerls, ginjfao lutve given their money and years of Service to the colony. Treatment like this is enough to make good men fight shy of joining any volunteer corps. I hope some abler pen than mine will take this matter up.—Yours, etc., OLD VOLUNTEER.
