"THE PRESS" "MORE MEN" FUND.

CONTRIBUTIONS OP ONE SHILLING INVITED. As explained in our leading columns yesterday, and in a circular issued with "The Press," we invite those of onr readers who think that tßif humbe/ot the New Zealand Contingent should be increased to send a shilling to the "More Men Fond ac an expression of their opinion to this effect. The amount thus raised will be devoted toj a' two-fold object—first, to purehasuig supplies' ahd extra comforts for the New ZeaJ&d Contingent, and second, to aid the PitriotioPund. Subscriptions will be received not only at j j the publishing office of "The Press," Cashel street, but at every agency of "The Press" throughout New Zealand. Lists will also be exhibited, and subscriptions received _ to-day, in iGathedral Square, at Lancaster Park, and at the trotting meeting at the Show Grounds. It is intended to publish a full list of donors in "The Press, and as the chief object is to elicit an expression of public opinion on the subject, it is requested that the names may be forwarded to us day by day as promptly as possible. There are only three points which we need recall to the minds of our readers in this place: — (1) The Mother Country is in uTgent need of men and las asked for our assistance. (2) A large number of New Zealand volunteers are eager to go to her help. (3) The cost of our first Contingent of 211 men is estimated at 9d per head of our population ; if we sent another 500 men, it would cost us about Is 10d per head additional; if we raised our total contribution to 1000 mounted men it would cost altogether no more than 3s 9d per head for each man, woman and child of the population. We sing "Rule Britannia," we lose no opportunity of proclaiming our devotion to the Motherland. Is even 3s 9d per head too much to contribute as a tangible expression of our patriotism? ~ A GOOD BEGINNING. Yesterday was not a good day on which to start our '*More Men," Fund. The shops were snut| 'people were ouit of town, and therVw'fU flinty one mail, namely, that in the morning;' Nevertheless, it will be seen thnt iik 'excellent beghmuig has been made j with our'fund. The patriotic spirit which exists is undftobted, and we futly expect a large accesj'on of names in the next day or two. We shall be glad if all thoae who believe that New Zealand should send more men will give in their names and shillings at once, either at this office or to any agent or runner for "The Press," holding one of our printed lists.
