In 1896—Hon. W. RoUestoa (0.) 1834, G. W. Russell (G.P.) 1443. Hon. W. Kotteston said that it. only remained for him to express his cordial thanks to those who had worked so loyally and heartily in his interests. It was a great comfort to him to find that he had not lost the confidence oi those who had invited him to stand for Riccarton in a previous Parliament. He desired to say to those who had opposed him that he hoped that he would give them reasons to change their opinions. Mr Russell also thanked those who had voted for him, and said it was a subject for congratulation that the election had been carried on in such an amicable spirit. \
