Cfctt. Lewis thanked the electors Horn "The Press" -windows. Hβ Mid:—Ladies and gentlemen,—l have to thank yon W7 heartily for once more retaining mc as one of your representatives for the City of Chfistchuroh. It is true that I have gone down a notch in the ladder, but that does fiot trouble mc very nrach in view of what ha* taken place throughout the rest of the •olony, ana I have been surprised to find ayteff ooqupy the position that I do. It it a tonroe of congratulation to mc that •lthough you have seen fit to make changes in your representatives you still retain the confidence you reposed in roe three years ago. I am looked upon, and perhaps rightly, to some extent, m a somewhat casual kind of • character, but there is a serious aide to tny character, and I ask you to believe mc <wbin I say that that serious side is upper* tacit to-night. No one can regard the:'« :'« which I have been placed without realising the very great responsibility ■which has been put upon my shoulders. It /will be my endeavour to discharge that responsibility without reference to who Toted for or against mc. I shall not detain rt further. I merely wish to thank you the position in which you have placed joe, and assure you that in the future, as An the past, I shall endeavour to serve your interests, and I hope that any ill-feeling engendered during the contest will be forrsien, and that we will be as good friends the future as in the past. (Cheers were ihen given for Mr Lewis, followed by groans for lit T. E. Taylor.)
