FIRE PREVENTION IN ST. ALBANS.
' The Extinguisher company from Chester street, under Foreman Tattersall, and ac- ! companied by Superintendent Smith, visited , the St. Albans district las£ night, in order to test the water supply for fire extinction purposes, and the result of their examination was,, speaking generally* satisfactory. It was found that the supply in the four . 400 gal tanks from tie 3in well in the Coun- ! cil yard would, in case of fire, give a con- ! tinuous jet for fully half aa hour, and with J slight improvements could be kept going for a longer period. The trial at the school bath was disappointing, as Superintendent Smith's suggestion, made some time ■ ago, to connect it with the sump in Spring- ; field road, had not been carried out, and !no water was. obtainable. A really good ! supply was got from the creek crossing Springfield road, which would be useful in caees of fires within a quarter of a mile j radius. At Webb street-a splendid sup- ; ply of water was obtained; and. , this would j protect.property on the Papanui road with--lin a quartet of a mile. At Chapel street the supply was also satisfactory. The Mayor !of St. Albans (Mr T. H. Davey)) and the • Councillors. were present at the test, and, j on their suggestion, the Brigade agreed to visit the district once a month, if posj sible, and at least once every two months, in order that the mea in may have ; an 'opportunity of becoming familiar' with 'all the places in the distriot where water is obtainable. The Brigade intend adopting a similar eoone in connection with the i Linwood anflNSrdenbam districta.
