FIRES.
A MAN BURNT TO DEATH.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELIGBAM.)
MARTON, September 13. A two-rooiped cottage, adjoining the White __art Hotel, Marton, was destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. The sole occupant was an elderly man named Hewitt. He w&s an old Wanganui identity, and perished in the flames. The deceased was the father of Mrs Samuel Gibbons, of the White Hart Hotel. His charred remains were found close to the door, and he was evidently overcome by the smoke in endeavouring to escape. THAMES, i-eptember 13. Two houses were burned down at Tararu last night, belonging to Mellitt and Stevens. The insurances were £170 in the Phoenix office and £100 in the Norwich Union. The loss is estimated at £800.
