VITAL STATISTICS.
Tbe total births in- the-four chief boroughs amounted to 26*. against 347 in July, an increase of 17. The deaths in August were 212, an increase of 45 on the number in July. Of the total deaths, males contributed 122, and females 91. Forty-six deaths were of children under five years of age, being 21.70 per cent, of the whole number; 37 of these were under one year of age. There were 74 deaths of persons of sixty-five years' of age and upwards, -even men, 70, 7l", 73, 74, 76, 81. 84, and fivo women, 68, 73, 74, 81, 92 died at Auckland : seven men, 66 (two), 68, 78, 82, 83, 91, and four women,' 65, 68, 70, 77, at Wellington; sixteen men. 65 (two), 66 (two), 70 (two), 73 (two}, 75 (three), 77, 78, 82, 84, 86, and nine women, 65, 67 (two), 69, 76, 77, 78, 89, 91, at Christchurch; twenty men, 66 (three), 67 (two), 68, 69, 70 (two), 71 (two), 72, 74, 75 (two), 76, 77, 78, 80, 84, and six women, 69, 71, 73 (two), 75, 85, at Dunedin.
