A CABLE STEAMER FIRED UPON. United Press Association—By 23-Scirio Telegraph—Copyright. . MANILA, June 27. Twelve per cent, of the whole oi the American forces, under General Otis, in the Philippines, are on t£e akk Hot. SYDNEY, June 28. * News from the East states that a laundh from the cable steamer Recorder containing Captain Maxell and Captain Tilley, officers lof the American Sign-tiling; Corps, and a ' number of Malays and Chinese, while pkki ing up the cable at Cebu, in the PMlippines, 1 were fired upon by a party of FHipinos. The majority jumped overboard, and Captain Tilley and two of the Malays were drowned. A warship and a body of troops have been sent to Cebu. The Cable Company's and American flags are almost alike, and it is supposed that the Filipinos mistook the Rei cords* for an American vessel.
