The American troops, supported by the defence ship Monadnock, brilliantly stormed ) Caloocan, the Filipinos losing heavily. Aguioaldo is rallying his forces at Malabon. WASHINGTON, February 11. President McKinley has signed the peace treaty. He has also recommended Congress to construct a cable via Hawaii to the Philippines. February 12. The Chairman of the Appropriations Committee informed the House of Representatives that the year's deficit amounted to 150.000,000d01s (£30,000.000) without reckoning the indemnity to be paid for the Philippines. He therefore opposed the expenditure of money in the construction of the Niearaguan canal. The Chairman of the Appropriations Committee is opposed to the recommendation br Mr Gage, Secretary of the Treasury, that in order to expand America's colonial trade and influence, bounties should be granted io American vessels in proportion to the mileage navigated.
