Sir George Turner has received an official oommundoation with reference to Mr Chamberlain's suggestion that the contributing colonies should compensate the New Guinea syndicate. He declares that the suggestion is ridiculous, and that as he was not consulted when the agreement was entered into, he declines to saddle Victoria with the cost of a blunder committed without the knowledge or consent of his Government. The Queensland Government had got into a muddle, and must get out of it. DISASTROUS FIRE. BRISBANE, February 5. A fire in Rockhampton destroyed Medcraft's biscuit factory, the damage being £10,000.
