Mr Clayton, the American representative in Mexico, has been installed the first American Ambassador in Mexico since the execution of tlie Emperor Maximilian in 1867. OBITUARY. PARIS, January 5. Tho death is announced of M. Aime Hcnre. a prominent figure in French journalism, nnd a member of the French Academy. (M. Aime Marie E. Herve w.xs born in 1835, at Saint-Penis, in the island of Reunion, and was the son of a Professor of M-ithem;i4ic3 in the Colleire of that town. lU'Kin.iinst his studies at Reunion, M. Herve finished them in a particularly brilliant manner in Paris n-t the College Napoleon. Devotiii- himself to journalism, he was connected fir.-t of all with the "Revue de I'lnstruction I'ublir-ue.'" and "Revue Contemporaine," and he then became editor of the "C'fHirrier de Dimanche," of the "Temps." and of the "Epoque." Later on he was one of the founders of the "Journal de Paris," and in 1873 .girled the "Soleil. A controversy with M. Edmruid About ended in a duel, iri which M. About, was slightly wounded. In 1376 the "Journal de Paris" wa.s di.scnn tinned, and M. Herve sine, remained editor of the ".Soleil." He became a momln-r of the French Academy in 1886.) THE AFRICAN CHIEF SAM Oil Y.
