The chief officer of the Alnwick is Mr Laws, who was "formerly in the Lutterworth and other sailing vessels under the Shaw, Saviii and Albion Company's flag. The Annie Hill arrived from Stewart Island yesterday morning. The i'alcon sailed for Havelock yesterday morning. The Ruahine is to" leave for Wellington next Frfday. The Auckland. "Herald" reports that a nameboard, about sft long, bearing the name "Auriga," also about half-a-dozen pieces of stern scroll work* was last week picked up on Milford boach, near Lake Takapuna. The Auriga arrived in Auckland from' London oa. October 22nd last, and cleared for Tonga on November 19ta. On 15th October there was launched a steel screw steamer by the Clydebank Engineering and Shipbuilding Company, built to the order of Messrs TurnbuH, Martin and C 0.,, of London, for the Australian and New Zealand trade. The vessel is 420 ft long, 54ft 6in broad, and 32ft moulded depth, and is of about "5800 tone-gross. She is fitted with triple expansion engines. The steam pressure is 1601b, pea* square inch, and the- boilers are fitted with Howden's forced draught. An installation of refrigerating machinery of the Linde type is fitted. The ship is lighted throughout by electricity. She has been built under Lloyd's special survey, and will be completely equipped to comply with the Board of Trade requirements for a passenger certificate. On leaving the ways she was christened the Fifeshiro. Seattle has been chosen as the American terminus of another Pacific steamship line which is to'ply between that port, Honolulu, and Australian ports. . A monthly, service will be inaugurated; which was to start on December Ist. The company expect to build up.as good a business as is now carried on by the Cana-dian-Australian lino operating from "Vancouver. Sydney will be the other terminus of the new line, which will be known as the British--American. It is to bs a permanent venture.
