MEETINGS, ENTERTAINMENTS, &c.
The musical and elocutionary contests under the auspices of the Canterbury Band of Hope Union, were concluded last night. Mr R. Evans, of Kaiapoi, occupied the chair, and there was a crowded attendance. The programme included dialogues, action songs, &c. The prize winners for- Thursday night were announced as under: —Vocal solos, Ladies' Class C, Miss Hore, Selwyn street South, first; Miss Hayman, Kaiapoi, second; Miss Wilson, Marshlands, third. Vocal solos, Gentlemenls Class C, Mr T. M. Potter, Selwyn street, first; Mr Freeman, Selwyn street, second. Violin solos, Class B, Master Burton, St. Asaph street, first; Master Ellen, Kaiapoi, second. Class C, Master Stephens, St. Asaph street, first. Flute solo, Class B, Miss Amy Corrick, St. Asaph street, first. Vocal duet, Mr and Miss Wilson, Marshlands, special. Tonight the programme will comprise selections by the prize-winners, and the prizes will be ]>resented by the President. Madame Winter and her pupils, with Mr M. Wintei, gave an enjoyable concert in the Congregational Hall last evening, in aid of the organ fund. Miss Leah Hardie sang "The Dream Angel" and "Serenata" well, and Miss Bushell gave "Bid me.to love" and "The Nightless Land" with much success. Mr Price sang "I Trust You Still," and Mr Winter himself contributed a couple of items, "Ine Holy City" and "What* Might Have Been," to the programme. The glee party sang a short selection from a cantata, which they have in practice. A couple of duets, "Juanita" and "Life's Dream, is O'er," were given by Misses Hardie and Bushell, and Madame Winter, who acted as accompanist and conductor, played a piano duet with Miss C. Hardie.
A meeting of ,tha Committee of the Amateur Athletic. Club was' held last night, when Mr A. H. Anderson presided. A letter was read from the hon. secretary tendering his resignation on account of business engagements. The resignation was accepted with regret, and it was resolved to advertise for paid secretary and treasurer, applications to be sent in by Tuesday next. Messrs Grierson, Hoare and Smith were appointed a sub-Committee to draft a programme for the Spring Meeting on October 27th and 29th and report. It was resolved to hold a special meeting to consider the advisableness of altering certain rules. It was decided to apply again to the N.Z.A.A.A. for permission to include bicycle races under League rules on the Club programmes. Ac the competition of the Rangiora Morris Tube Club for Mark Scott's trophy and Mr Hope's trophy, on Thursday, the best scores were made by Mr B. D'Auverene, 33; C. W. Bill, W. Efford, C. Fraser, D. Hope, R. Walker, 32; R. Efford, J. J. Wilson, F. Gulliver, F. Baker, 31; H. Gulliver, E. D'Auvergne, H. Rule, 30.
