United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, September 20. ' The fifth series of colonial wool sales opened to-day. Competition was brisk, and prices ranged from par to 5 per cent, advance, compared with the closing safes of the last series.The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,172,000 quarters, and for the Continent, 850,000 quarters. September 21. At the wool sales the joint catalogue of Messrs Balme," Buxton, and Dseroz comprised 12,399 bales of irregular selection, including 6931 bales from New Zealand. There was a large attendance, but no American buyers were present. CompeHtion was keen, especially for Home requirements. Merinos advanced 5 per cent above Jujy rates. Crossbreds are unchanged; sales of fine occasionally resulted in sellers' favour.

Oats, Algerian, Is IOd ; Tartarian, Is 9d to 2s Id; stout white, 2s 2d to 2s 3d. Barley, fair malting, 4s 6d, Maize, 2s 3£d. Bran, 7A Pollard, 7d to Potatoes, £8 10s to £8 16s. Onioua, £15. ADELAIDE, September 21. Wheat, quiet, 3s 4d to 3s 6d, Flour, £10, Oats, New Zealand, 3s lOd to 4s; local, 2s to 2s 3d. Barley, 3s 9d to 4s. Bran, Bd. Pollard, 9d.
. The New Zt-rland Loan and Mercantile Agency Crnipany, Limited, has received the following London cable message, dated 20th September: — "Wool—The sales opened at an average advance of about 5 per cent, on hist sales closing rates, except coarse crossbred, for which. the market is easier Competition by both Home and Foreign buyers $s active. Attendance of both Home and Foreign buyers is good. The total quantity available, including wool held orer from last series, is 282,000 bales, 56,000 bales of which have been forwarded to the manufacturing districts direct."
The New Zealand Fanners' Co-operatiye Association of Canterbury, Limited, is in receipt of the following cable message from, its London office, tinder date 21st September, 1898: — "Wool Sales have opened, and as. compared with the closing rates of the preceding series, all descriptions of merino 5 per cent- higher, crossbred slipe 5 per cent, higher, crossbred coarse unchanged. "Frozen Meat—To-day's value in Smithfield Market—Mutton, .2s 3d per stone, market is steady; lamb, 3s 6d per stone, market ia hardening.*
