The barque Golden Gate was cleared for Newcastle yesterday, and sails to-day. The Rosamond passed the Farewell Spit at 1.50 p.m. yesterday. The steamer John Anderson will not run to Little Akaloa on Saturday. .' The Upolu did not get away on Tuesday night as was anticipated, but left .for Dunedin yesterday morning, ':' The Waihora 'arrived from Dunedin yesterday morning, and sailed for Sydney via Auckland last night. The Hesketh left Greymouth for Lytteiton at 5 p. m. yesttrday. The Board of Trade have awarded a binocular glass to Herleef Valdemar Sorensen, master of the Chilian steamship Cachapoal, of Valparaiso, in recognition of his-humanity and kindness to the survivors of the shipwrecked crew of the British barque Cordillera, of Liverpool, (Newcastle to Valparaiso), which foundered off Valparaiso on November Bth, 1897. • ■ . Mr David Richmond,-Lord Provost of Glasgow, has formally opened the new graving dock constructed on the south side of the Clyde by the Trustees of the Clyde Navigation. The'new dock is the largest of its kind ia the kingdom, and with a total length of 880 ft and a width at the entrance of 83ft, can accommodate the biggest battleship or liner. A gate divides the basin into two lengths. of 460 ft and 420 ft respectively, and there is thus provision for docking at one time two vessels of considerable size. With; a depth of 26ft 6in, tbe dock has a capacity of 13,440,000 gallons, and can be emptied in less than a couple of hours. The cost of the works, including pumping and other apparatus, amounts to about £240,000. Mr James Deas, engineer of the Clyde Trust, is the designer of the' dock, and: the works have been carried through under his superintendence. At the formal opening the Anchor liner City of Rome was snccessf nlly floated into the basin.
