AMBERLEY STEEPLECHASE CLUB.
The annual meeting of the Amberley Steeplechase Club was held at the Crown Hotel, Amberley, on Monday. There was a full attendance, and Mr F. Courage, president, occupied the chair. The balancesheet was read and received, showing the surplus as follows :—Credit balance, 1897, £21 7s ; subscriptions £67 19s, nominations and acceptances £60 15s, totalisator £100 16s 3d, and sundries £76 16s • 9d, making a total of £327 14s. The expenses were—Stakes £171, printing, Sec, £13 13s, officials £2* 18s, work and repairs on course £59 6s sd, sundry expenses £58 Os Id, leaving a credit balance of 16s 6d in hand. The assets were—Bank deposits £103 10s, sundries £32 16s 6d; there were no liabilities. It was resolved to hold the annual steeplechase on the Thursday following the Grand National meeting. The officials appointed were:—President, Mr F. Courage; Vice-President, Messrs G. B. Starkey and C. Dampier - Crossley; stewards, Messrs F. H. Courage, S. Coleman, D. Rutherford, R. Parsons, P. T. Baker, T. Chapman, H. G. W. Gray, L. H. Lane, J. H. B. Oliver, W. Thomson, H. Lance and R. C. Wilson ; judge, Mr F. Courage; handicappers, Messrs W. Tb.om.ton and F. H. Pyne; starter, Mr W. Thomson; clerk of scales, Mr W. H. Rhodes; clerk of course, Mr B. Coleman; treasurer, Mr T. McNaught; secretary, Mr A. S. Clarkson ; course committee, Messrs Starkey, Parsons and Lane. The programme of last year was adopted, including stakes to the value of £180. Canvassers were appointed.' The stewards agreed to meet on Monday, June 27th.
Amongst a great budget of interesting matter in. the current number of the " Referee," may be mentioned the editorial comments on the Crescent and Lobo cases, an account of a visit to Mr S. H. Gollan's stud at MangataraCa, notes on Newhaven running in England, and correspondence on the breeding of the Oaks winner, Airs and Graces, and Cinizelli. There is a vast amount of news by the' English and American mail, while the week's doings on the New Zealand turf is fully chronicled by the various members of the staff of special correspondents. Special notes on the N.S.W. Kennel Club's showj at which New Zealand bred dogs were so successful, are given. The football, cycling, cricket, and genera) athletic notes will be found up-to-date, and full of interest.
