The crew of the Activ were busy yesterday setting up a new foretopmast and repairing her bulwarks. Some slight repairs were being done to the; 1 Jessie Niccol yesterday. The Matatua will probably sail for London to-morrow. ./ The Tarawera sailed for Dunedin yesterday afternoon. She will not leave Dunedin for Melbourne till next week. The Penguin sailed for Nelson, via Wellington, last evening. The Morning Light arrived from Waitapu yesterday afternoon. Messrs Pitcaithly, [ Wallace and Co. load her here for Wellington. The Lily arrived yesterday from Waitapu, and will return to that port loaded with produce by Messrs Pitcaithly, Wallace and Co. ' . ■ The Falcon asrived from Havelock yesterday. The Eliza Firth arrived from Kaipara yesterday. The New Zealand Shipping Company's s.s. VVaikato arrived about noon yesterday. Captain J. W. Croucher is still in command, and has the following officers :—Chief, Mr R. Fraser ; second, Mr J. J. Cameron ; third, Mr J. A. Turnbull; fourth, Mr R. White. The engine department is under Mr W. C. Chalk, bis assistants being Messrs J. Christie, J. Davie, and J. Grant. The refrigerating engineers are Messrs J. McGilL and J. Lee. The Waikato left the. Royal Albert Dock, London, on March 31st, at 9 a.m., and proceeded down the Thames to Hole Haven, where she received a quantity of gunpowder and dynamite, and was detained at the Nore by frg till 9 a.m. on following day. Fine weather was carried to the equator, but the S.E. trade winds were strong, with an unusually large amount of rain, and there was a high head sea, which considerably impeded tno ship's progress. The Cape of Good Hope was passed at 5.30 p.m. on April 23th, and comparatively moderate weather followed, northerly and north-westerly winds prevailing with much rain, and but little was seen of the sun; indeed, there was an interval of six days during which. "Old Sol " did not once* show his lace. More boisterous weather was encountered after passing the meridian of Cape Leuwin. Put Into Hobart on the 24th, and left at 11 a.m. on the 25th. Had moderate S. W. winds and fine weather across the Tasman sea. The Waikato loads here 25,000 carcases and sails on Thursday evening for limarn and Dunedin, whence ehe sails direct for London. Messrs Lane and Brown, of Whangaroa, Auckland, are finishing an auxiliary screw schooner named the Thistle for the Wanganui Freezing Association. The vessel is 90 feet long, 20 feet beam, and 8 feet 6 inches in depth of hold. She is to be used as a lighter, conveying frozen meat from the shore to ocean-going ships anchored in the Wanganni roadstead. Her cooling chambers will be insulated with Firth's pumice, and will accommodate 1800 carcases of motion.
