NOTES AND MEMORANDA.
The annual show of the Christchurcli Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club will open on Thursday.next, at 2 p.m., in Mr Tabart's store. The entries in all the classes are large, and the birds of excellent quality, so that a really good show may be looked forward to.
The annual meeting of the Christchurch Horticultural Society will be held at the rooms of the A- and P. Association, Hereford street, to-morrow evening, when some important alterations in the rules of the Society will be brought forward for discussion.
The firm oi Messrs Sargood and Co., of Melbourne, tihe head establishment of the well-known firm here of Sargood, Son and Ewen, have commenced the erection of thennew warehouse in Melbourne, to replace that destroyed by the late fire. The new establishment, when completed, will cover an acre of ground. It will be 84ft high from the pavement, and will be fitted with no less than 100 sprinklers, which will act automatically in case of fire. The roof is to be absolutely fire-iproof, no timber whatever being used in its construction. It may be noted, as an instance .if the largest purchase of soft goods in one line ever concluded in the colonies, that the firm recently purchased from a Canadian manufacturer 19,548 pieces of print, equal to 781,920 yards. A public meeting will be held this evening,, in the Women's Christian Temperance Union Coffee Rooms, Gloucester street, in aid of funds to promote temperance amongst the Maori women of the North Island. Addresses will be given by Rev. Canon Stack and Mr Kohere.
The inaugural ball of the Avonside Tennis Club will take place at the Art Gallery, Durham street, .to-morrow evening. The officers and committee have been unremitting in. their efforts to make the ball a success, and all the arrangements are exceedingly complete. The catering is in efficient hands, and Messrs Fox Bros, will supply the music. Tlh© annual road race in connection with the Pioneei Bicycle Club, postponed from Queen's Birthday, will be held on Thursday next, starting from the Riccarton Hotel at 2 p.m. A large number of entries have bsen received, and several more are expected before the final closing, which takes place to-day.
An emergency meeting of Lodge St. Augustine, No. 4, will be held in the St. Augustine Hall at 7.30 to-night. A lantern lecture on " Church Missionary Work in Japan," will be given at the V.M.C.A. rooms to-night by Mr E. T. Cox. The Rev. Lyttelton Fitzgerald will take the chair.
A concert and lecture will be given on Saturday evening next in aid of the Garrison Band Fund. The lecture, which will be delivered by Professor Mathew, will be appropriate to the day, 18th June, as the subject selected is "Waterloo." The concert will be under the direction of Mr A. J. Merton, and a very excellent programme has been arranged. As will be seen by'a notification elsewhere tenders are invited by the Wanganui County Council for the erection of a pile bridge across the Wangaehu river at Wangaehu, on the main road between Wanganui and Palmerston. Plans and specifications can be seen at the Press office. Tenders are to be sent in on or before Wednesday, 20th July, to the offices of the Council, Taylorville, Wanganui. • The next local examination in practical music in connection with Trinity College, London, will be held in October. The entries close on July 4th, and application forms can be had from the local secretary, Mr Davis Hunt. . . "
A most attractive programme of muaic, both vocal and instrumental, has been arranged for the next social concert on Wednesday evening in connection with the Caledonian Society. A number of ladies and gentlemen who have not yet been heard in the rooms previously will take part in the programme* ' ,
