LORD WOLSELEY.
LIKELY TO BE GOVERNORGENERAL OF CANADA. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph — Copyright. Received June 12th, 5 p.m. London, July 11. It is expected that Lord Wolseley, who is in bad health, will succeed the Earl of Aberdeen as Governor-General of Canada. Lord Wolseley has been Comraander-in-Chief of the Army since 1895. He has had a distinguished military career, and his services during the Ashanti war in 1873. when in command of the troops on the Gold Coast, and later as Commander-in-Chief of the Expeditionary Force to Egypt in 1882, and of the Gordon Relief Expedition in 1884-85, are well known. The office of Commander-in-Chief of the Army was conferred on Lord Wolaeley for a term of five years, and under conditions not precisely similar to those existing when the office was held by the Duke o( Cambridge. The system put under trial on Lord Wolseley's appointment included the establishment of an Army Board, consisting of the Commander-in-Chief, the Adjutant - General, the Quartermaster - General, the Inspector-General of Fortifications, and the Inspector-General of Ordnance, each of these officials being directly responsible to the Secretary of State for his own department.
