WELLINGTON.
Wellington, June 7.
On Saturday the Wellington-Melrose game was one of the best this season. The latter won by 6to 3. The forward play was excellent on both sides, but inclined to roughness on the part of Melrose. Adams was ordered off the field, and at least two other men of both sides should have been sent off. In the Petone-Oriental match, the suburban team won by 10 to 6, the latter being outclassed.
Athletics beat Poneke by 16 to nil. The back play of the winners was very fair, but the once champion club have fallen off terribly, their play being very second-rate this season.
In the junior ianks Petone beat Wellington by 10 to 5, Poneke beat St. Patrick's College by 11 to 10, Athletics beat Wellington College by 16 to 6, Melrose beat Oriental by 16 to 0.
Rough play was the subject of a discussion at the Referees' Association last week, and it was decided to send a man off the field without warning. Several men were warned several times on Saturday, and only one example was made. What is the good of passing resolutions if they are to become a dead letter? Then, again, referees shouid be competent men, and all of the gentlemen that act here are not so.
