GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS.
(by our commercial editor.) Friday Evkntxg. In sympathy with the Home market wheat values in the colonies have weakened during the past fortnight. This week's quotations for Australian wheat are twopence below those of last week. An endeavour is still being made to relieve the market in Victoria of surplus wheat, and the "Australasian," of May 28th, reports that " both the Barunga and the Spica are now on the berth for Capetown to load cargoes of Riverina wheat. The Stuttgart cleared for
Bremen on Monday with 2093 bags. Of Victorian wheat, shipments to be made by the Bracadale this week for London will cover close on 20,000 bags. The Loch Torridon at the moment is loading 1000 tons, the Florence Stella 1200 tons, while the Loch. Yennacher, to arrive, will carry 500 tons. Arrangements are being made for further consignments to South Africa." Locally there is practically nothing doing in wheat. A certain amount could be taken for export north, but the limit of price is somewhat below what holders are asking. Millers are not buying as they stocked largely during ihe recent excitement in the market, and as their output is limited to local and coastwise trade they have sufficient wheat for their requirements for some little time to come. There is now a fairly large amount of wheat being offered by growers, and this, coupled with the temporary absence of demand, has tended to weaken prices, and caused the reaction to be more pronounced than the position perhaps warranted. At the auction sale held yesterday there was very little business done in wheat, and only in a few cases was the reserve reached. Oats are keeping firm but the business doing i 9 of a hand to mouth character.
The advance in the Sydney potato market has caused local buyers for export to advance their limit to £6, and confidence in the future of the market has led to £6 10s being offered for July delivery. Onions have also firmed, and £8 is now the quotation. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report that at their monthly grain sale yesterday afternoon, they offered a catalogue of about 1200 sacks grain and produce. There was a fair attendance of millers and produce merchants, but competition was dull, and many lines were passed in, as the bidding fell short of owners' ideas of values. About 400 sacks were disposed of in the auction room at the following prices, ex store :— Fair milling wheat 4s sd, fowl wheat os 7d to 4s Id, superior oats 2s 9d, good feed oats 2a 7d, oat straw chaff 30s.
