ROAD BOARDS.
RICCARTON. The ordinary meeting of this Board was held on Monday, at the office, Fendalton. Present—Messrs Boag, Nunweek, Jackson, Deans, and Hanson. Mr Wm. Boag was un&niniou&ly re-elected Chairman for the ensuing year. In answer to an application for a footpath on the north side of the Riccarton road, between Edinborough street and tii»,e West belt, .the Board directed the surveyor to report as to the cost, &c. A traveller wrote complaining of the timber, &c, ' deposited on JjligH's road as dangerous to travellers. It was decided to give the owner notice to remove it. An application from 'Air Hyndman for better drainage for Clarence road adjoining his property, was referred to the surveyor for report as to levels, &c. It was decided to comply with an application from Mr Ciaridge that, the pipes crossing the Sawyers' Arms road should be lowered. The Chmtchurch Drainage Board and the South Waimakariri Biver Hoard notified the rates to be levied for the current year. Ifc was resolved to collect these rates with the general road rata. The Selwyn County Council notified that the sum of ±!442 2s lid was 5 chargeable against this district .for tlhe current year for hospitals and charitable aid. It was resolved to pay the amount out of ordirnary funds. The Board decided to prepare its own poisoned wheat for thia winter. The clerk of the Spreytdon Road Board wrote stating that a conference would be held at the fcselwyn County Council Chambers at S p.m. on lUursd&y, June 9tb, to consider the unfairness of the system of«rating by the Christchurch Drainage Board. It was resolved that the Chaiiman and Messrs Hanson and Jackson represent the Board at the Conference. The clerk was directed to ask the Addington Saleyards Company wJipfc amcunt they will contribute towards the cost of a lamp near the yards. From the Avon Road Board asking, on behalf Papamii Progressive Committee, that the Riccartpn Road Board appoint two delegates to attend a Conference o; the local bodies to consider the subject of a water supply. Messrs I Jackson, Nunweek, and the surveyor were appointed to represent the Board at the Conference of local* bodies with reference to a water supply. Messrs Deans and Hanson were drawn to retire at the end of the first year. The Board took into consideration the resolution passed at Addington on the 22nd April relative to the site tea abattoirs (which had been deferred for the consideration of the new Board), and tSbp following resolution was carried unanimously—"That, in the opinion of the Riccarton Road Board, it is inadvisable for sanitary reasons that public abattoirs should be erected in so thickly populated a locality as Addington." It was unanimously resolved to levy a general road rate of nine-sixteenths of a penny in the £, being one-sixteenth less than last year. Sundry ro«d repairs were ordered to be carried out. ELLESMERE. The onunary meeting of the Ellesmere Hoad Board took place on Wednesday.' Present—Messrs Wm. McMillan (chairman), W. Nixon, John Gilbert, J. Storry, aSd R. Lochhead. Lα regard to a petition asking the Board to improve Johnston's, road, LaJteside, the Overseer is to inspect and repoKfc. Applications for assistance in cleaning drains were dealt with. Mr John Milne applied to the Board to open up Parkinson's road leading to his section. The Overseer is to inspect this road and report. The North Rakaia River Board requested the Board to take action against parties allowing gorse to grow on roads fronting on the River Board's reserves. It was resolved that the amount, £591 4s 6d, required for hospital and charitable aid should be paid out of the ordinary funds of the Board. The Receiver of Land Revenue advised the Board of the payment of £51 13s 8d to the Board's credit on account) of thirds accrued and payable. The Leeston Poundkeeper applied for improvements to the pound. It was decided to carry out "certain improvements, the Poundkeeper to bear part of the cost. Messrs H. J. Young and H. Dierek interviewed the Board and requested improvements to the Leeston drain. The Clerk was directed to communicate with the Government asking if it is prepared to pay half the share of filling up the drain and forming a footpath in front of the Leeston Courtuouse property. The Overseer's report was read and considered. It was resolved to call for tenders for shingling Leeston roads and cleaning drain; also for clearing gorse near neslerton. It was decided to; repair the road by the Brookaide Church) I Brookside and Dunsandel roads, and the iSouthbridge road by Bellfield. It was decided that in future the ordinary meetings should commence at 12.30 p.m. I
