THE HOSPITAL AND PASTEURISED MILK.

TO THK EDITOR OK THE VSIESS. Sir, —From your local in yesterday's, paper it appears that the muddle re the. above question arise*, not from the medical staff, but lies between the chairman of the Board and the house surgeon. At yesterday's meetiug the chairman stated that he had no written report upon the subject, but he had spoken with the house surgeon, who, in conversation, informed him that from his knowledge of pasteurised milk he was not favourably di-posed towards it.

Now, Sir, the house surgeon is an important public officer, receives a good salary from the public purse, and, as his opiuion upon the subject is directly at variance with the opinion of almost every other medical man, I hereby call upon him to give his reasons why he does not look with favour upon pasteurised milk, and thus enlighten the public and also the medical faculty. If be is right they must be wrong. Thero ia a strange coincidenc* in the city just now. We have another institution, over which a medical officer prosides, the Asylum, and strange to say this medical officer looks with so much favour upon the pasteuri-ation of milk, and regards it as of so much importance, tliat he has just pu-chased a complete plant, which is now being erected at the Asylum. At this institution they have their own cows, and no doubt these cows will be well looked after, and if it is necessary that their milk should be pasteurised, surely it is necessary that other milk should be pasteurised. If the Hospital surgeon is right steps should immediately be taken to stop further waste of public money at the Asylum. I do not for a moment expect " the reasons" will be forthcoming because there are no l-eason** such as any medical man would put hi" name to.—Yours, &c., J. Knott.
