DRAUGHTS.
««Weekly Press and Referee." fiDITKD BY J. LITTM. Champien ef Australasia. WnnT Prms, April 13. TO CORRESPONDENTS. Mr Morgaji Laurbsson, Christchurch.— Your solutions are not correct. In 566, Black's 6th move, play 15-19 draws. Compare the others with the author's solution. They are all too intricate for most amateurs. Try 568 and 569 a which are cot very difficult. PROBLEM NO. 569. By Mr W. D. Beustead, Lowestoft. From the " Draughts World." BLACK.

(b) This move corrects " McCulloch's Anderson," "Whilter" var. 2, also the " American Draughts Player," var. 22, where 27 23 is moved, allowing a draw. This has not as yet been published in book form so far as I know. J.F. The above jb from "Steams' Book olj Portraits," vol. 2, and is a fine specimen qfi the late Mr James Ferguson's masterly pljjfl ITEMS. |$F "The North American Checker Board."— The last number contains a fine likeness of the famous player and problemist, Roderick A. Gurley. A. J. Heffner continues his able article on the "Kelso," trap for the unwary.. The " Cross" is ably treated by R. A. Davis, and the " Old Fourteenth," and a variety of other games, good problems, and gossip of the game make a very interesting number. " The Draughts World, No. 14 and 15," new series, are to hand, and give a pretty full report of the Scottish Championship Tournament, with a portrait of the youthful champion, Harry Freedraan. The games, problems and literary matter are all up to the high standard of excellence which makes its perusal a source of pleasure to all lovers of the silent game. MAORIS v. EUROPEANS. Wβ are indebted to a northern friend for the following report:— A very interesting draughts match was played on March 11th at Mr C. Batfc's restaurant, Wanganui, when the champions of the Maori race met to try conclusions for the second time with their white brothers. Fourteen boards were engaged, four games being played at each. As will be seen by the appended scores, the Europeans were victorious, securing twenty-nine games as against their opponents eighteen, the remaining nine being drawn. During the evening the Maoris were entertained by their opponents, Mrs Batt and her assistants providing an abundance of appetising light refreshments. Scores:— Europeans. , Maoris. Wins. Draws'.
