"INLAND PRINTER," -■• Of Chicago, Which may be described as the Arbiter of all Merit in the Printing World, and whose Judgments are more often of the cutting than the soothing order, ha 3 the following PARAGRAPH in its issue Of November last :— " Owing to a miscarriage of the mails, the "INLAND PRINTER" has received at this late data a copy of the " WEEKLY PRESS AND NEW ZEALAND REFEREE," Christchurcb, New Zealand, SPECIAL CHRISTMAS NUMBER, 1896. This Special Number ie replete with fine hall-tone lloslrations of scenery in and adjacent to the various New Zealand towns and cities. Many American newspapers conld take a hint from this handsome Special Number in its avoidance of coloured inks. It is ONE of the MOST CREDITABLE Souvenir Numbers we have seen. Short stories by A. Conan Doyle, S. R. Crockett, Mrs Hunjferford and Amelia E. Barr • show the enterprise of the editorial management.. The descriptive matter is crisp and comprehensive, and, while there ia no evidence of pretension, it is evident that ew persons into whose hands the paper nay fall can ai to be favourably impressed by the beauty of~Sevr ealand and its resources. A paper which makes this impression for the good of the community from which it comes is certainly deserving of the wannest commendation. We are iudebted to the ' courtesy of the Manager of the Printing: Department of the Chrißtchureh Press Company, Limited, for the , specimens received." 1 ■ It will be noted that the above refers to the 1896 Christmas Number. That of 1897 also comes in for hearty praise, as will be seen by the following extract rora a letter received from MESSRS MARION and CO., the Leading Art Printers in London :— ' " Soho square, 14 th January, 1898. 1 "We duly received your favour of ihe 29th October, lso copy of paper. The illustrationa—process blocks —are certainly very good, and compare well with > Home papers." " Process Work,™ published in London, says in ie February issue :— From the Chris tchurch Pees 3 Company, limited, Xew Zealand, we hive received the Christmas I number of the "Weekly Press," a handsome shilling's worth, containing a very large Dumber ot half-tone engravings. We are surprised to see the excellent quality a* work turned out ia this distant and mountainous country. Without exception every illustration is excellent, and we doubt if English firms could do much better for the purpose. The whole number is one of which the ; publishers may justifiably be proud. It will be highly valued wherever it is sent, not only as a pic \ tonal record of the jrraod and beautiful scenery of New Zealan J, but also as a specimen of the printing , and leosraving produced in that country.".
