HOSPITAL BOARD.
The Chri9t<shnrch Hospital Board met at 2 p.m. yesterday. Present—Messrs R. D. Thomas (Chairman), J. Hamilton, G. Wallace, J. Gongh, C. F. Money, C. M. Gray, J. Hadfield, J. G. Murray, G. PayR. Westenra, W. Dunlop, A. Marshall, J. Dobson.
The statement of accounts showed as under:—Kaikoura £7 Is 4d, Linwood £9 15s 7it, Akatoa £25 6s 2d, ChrisLchurch £73 18s Id, Sdwyn £139 13s 7d, Ashley £6 15s, Amuri £14 Bs, St. Albans £12 Is 7d, Kaiapoi £22 4s 6d, Sydenham £86 189, Eyreton £25 8s 3d, Waipara £204 18s Bd, Mandeville £40 3s 6rt, Lyttelton £51 19s, Cast £17 7s, West Eyreton £13 5s 9d. Ashley £6 15?, fees £28 4s, sale waste £1 4s—£7B3 7s. Expenditure, £700 69 3d. The House Committee reported :—Dr. Win. Irving has entered on his duties as assistant house surgeon. Miss Ruth Payne will be prepared to commence duties as matron on the Ist prox., Sister Ewart in the meantime acting as matron. With regard to the defective plaster in the Marks Ward, the architects have informed the committee that the contractor has been called upon to reinstate, in ; terms of his contract, and the work is now in hand. A question having been raised as to the feasibility of tixing tanks inside the roof of the Marks ward on brick walls, which are corridor walls, and only extend to the level of upper ceilings, the Committee had written to the architects on the subject. The Committee recommended that tenders for supplies for the ensuing year should be accepted as follows:— Groceries, F. A. Cook ; meat, H. S. Harris ; fish and poultry, Dennis Bros. ; milk, pure, S. Sparka ; bread, R. Sutherland ; drugs, C. E. Brooke ; coal, G. McClatchie ; drapery, Ballantyne and Co. ; wine 3 and spirits, J. Shand; aerated waters, J. Lister; sweep chimneys, G. Mills; burials, G. Barrel!. Akaroa Hospital—Groceries, Arming ; meat, Hart; milk, Fyfe; and bread, Arming. With regard to the estimates for the ensuing year, the Committee pointed out that no additional levies would be required from local bodies.
I*> was resolved that instead of using tanks Mr £. Dobson's original recommendation shouid be accepted on the question of water supply. The report as amended was adopted.
The estimates for the year 1898-9 were passed. The expenditure amounted to £9600, half of which it was decided should be allocated for collection from the local bodies.
It was decided to allocate £2147 for extra boiler-power and electric lights. The House Surgeons reported that during February 85 patients were admitted, 79 discharged, 6 died, leaving 79 remaining on the&Bth. Thecauses of death were:—Compound fracture of skull, sarcoma of sacrum, septicaemia, leuco-cythaemia, hydatids of peritoneum, and diphtheria. Fifty operations were performed under and 497 patients were attended in the out-patient department. After passing accounts the Board adjourned.
