FIRES.
» . , A fire broke out on. Friday night in an eight-roomed house at New Brighton, occupied by Mr John Reynolds, and owned by Mr McAlpine. The house, which was near the eld New Brighton bridge, was burned to the ground, nothing being saved with the exception of a few blankets and small articles of furniture. The origin of the fire, which seemed to have broken out in a cupboard near the kitohen fireplace, is unknown. Mrs Reynolds noticed a smell of smoke before going to bed, but seeing no sign of fire took no further notioe for some time. Later on another search was made and the kitchen was found to be full of smoke. Soon after flames broke out and in a short; time the house, which was an old wooden one, was all in a blaze. The building was insured for £300 in the Victorian office, and Mr Reynolds's furniture for £150 in the United.
About seven o'clock last night the Lyttelton fire bell was rung, and the Brigade turned out very promptly. The fire, however, which was only some grass and gorse burning in the Bay road, was speedily extinguished, and little damage was done. At about ten o'clock on Saturday night a stack of oat straw owned by Messrs Samuel Frisk and Sons was completely destroyed at Opawa. The fire is supposed to have been caused by a spark from a locomotive, as the line passes close to the spot. The stack, which was valued at £45, was uninsured.
