RECOGNITION of NEW ZEALAND ENTERPRISE. fTIHE "INLAND PRINTER," Ot Chicago, Which may be described as the Arbiter of all Merit in the Printing World, and whose Judgments are more often of the cutting than the soothing order, has the following PARAGRAPH in its issue of November last:— " Owing- to a miscarriage of the mails, the "INLAND PRINTER" has received at this late date a copy of the " WEEKLY PRESS AND NEW ZEALAND REFEREE," v Christchurcb, New Zealand, SPECIAL CHRISTMAS NUMBER, 1896. This Special Number is replete with fine half-tone llustrations of scenery in and adjacent to the various New Zealand towns and cities. Many American newspapers could take a hint from this handsome Special Number in its avoidance of coloured inks. It is ONE ot the MOST CREDITABLE Souvenir Numbers we have seen. Short stories by A. Conan Doyle, S. R. Crockett, Mrs Hungerford and Amelia E. Barr show the enterprise of the editorial management. The descriptive matter is crisp and comprehensive, and, while there is no evidence of pretension, it is evident that ew persons into whose hands the paper may fall can all to he favourably impressed by the beauty of New ealand and its resources. A paper which makes this impression for the good of the community from which it comes is certainly deserving ot the warmest commendation. We are indebted to the courfcesv of the Manasrer of the Printing Department of the Christchurch Press Company, Limited, for the specimens received." ' It will be noted that the above refers to the 1896 Christmas Number. That of 1897 also comes in for hearty praise, as will be seen by the following extract rom a letter received from MESSRS MARION and 00., the Leading A. t Printers in London :— " Soho square, 14th January, 1898. " We duly received your favour of the 29th October, also copy of paper. The illustrations—process blocks —are certainly very good, and compare well with Home papers." " Process Work," published in London, says in it February issue:— From the Christchurch Pirss Company, Limited, New Zealand, we have received the Christmas number of the "Weekly Press," a handsome shilling's worth, containing a very large number ot half-tone engravings. We are surprised to see the excellent quality of work turned out in this distant and mountainous country. Without exception every illustration is excellent, aad we doubt if English firms could do much better for the purpose. The whole number is one of which the publishers may justifiably be proud. It will be highly valued wherever it is sent, not only as a pictorial record of the grand and beautiful scenery of New Zeal an 3, but also as a specimen ot the printing and engraving produced in that country." MONEY FOR INVESTMENT. FREEHOLD SKCURITIES required for several sums of money at present awaiting investment at the Lowest Current Rates of Interest. » RICHARD D. THOMAS, Solicitor, 207 Hereford street, Christchurch.
