MEMBERS' EXPENSES.
Mr. Russell, judging by his letter ; in another column, is evidently very angry, which perhaps accounts for his misquoting our remarks and twisting the Parliamentary return. As to. our "erecting Mr. Lewis on a pedestal," we spoke of him in exactly the same way as we did of Mr. Montgomery, who is on Mr. Russell's side in politics. Nearly all the other cases quoted by Mr. Russell are those of members who would be likely to have to stop over owing to steamers and trains not corresponding. We do not know the circumstances under which Mr. Rolleston charged £8 in 1893, but Mr. Russell omits to mention that in 1891 and 1892 Mr. Rolleston charged nothing Jfor expenses. This omission is quite chanicteristic of the ex-member for Riccariion.
